What is AI? Don’t let this Buzz(word) kill!

While businesses are jumping on to the bandwagon of AI, it is imperative that this cybersecurity is factored into the design, development and deployment of AI systems/solutions.

AI, or artificial intelligence, is a buzzword that you may have heard a lot lately. But what does it really mean? Well, it depends on who you ask. AI is a term that covers a wide range of technologies and applications that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, decision-making, perception, and creativity. Sounds amazing, right? But there is a catch. There is no clear or universal definition of what AI is or how to measure its capabilities and limitations. This makes it hard to secure AI systems and ensure their ethical and responsible use.

You see, different people may have different views or expectations of what AI is or can do, depending on their background, context, and goals. For example, some may think of AI as any system that can mimic or surpass human performance on a specific task, such as playing chess, recognizing faces, or driving cars. Others may see AI as a broader concept that includes the potential for machines to exhibit general intelligence or the ability to understand and solve any problem across domains. Still, others may view AI as a tool or a partner that can augment or enhance human capabilities rather than replace them.

These diverse and sometimes conflicting perspectives on AI pose significant challenges for securing AI systems and ensuring their trustworthiness and accountability. For instance, how can we make sure that AI systems are aligned with human values and goals and do not cause harm or injustice to humans or other entities? How can we check that AI systems are robust and reliable and can handle uncertainty and adversarial attacks? How can we protect the privacy and security of the data and models that AI systems rely on and prevent unauthorized or malicious access or manipulation? How can we make sure that AI systems are transparent and explainable and that their decisions and actions can be understood and justified by humans?

These are some of the key questions that cybersecurity researchers and practitioners need to address when designing and deploying AI systems within businesses. Cybersecurity is not only about preventing or mitigating attacks but also about ensuring the quality, integrity, and accountability of AI systems and their outcomes. Cybersecurity is essential for building trust and confidence in AI and for enabling its safe and beneficial use for society.

If this buzzword, we know as AI, is not designed, developed and deployed with cybersecurity controls factored in, it can lead to serious repercussions, killing all of the value that your company has created for its shareholders. Don’t let this buzzword kill!
